public service announcement, dirty truths

The lovely comments you leave for me always make my day. They also worry me, though, because they suggest that some of you see me as some sort of role model. You shouldn’t. I’d feel so guilty if you actually turned out like me. Don’t get me wrong, I think I’m pretty great in a lot of ways. But there’s also a side of me that you don’t see too often that is totally grungy, selfish, and indefensible. Anyways, after seeing The Campaign (twice, actually, and it was way funnier the second time because of lowered expectations), I’m inspired to give brutal honesty a shot. So here are ten reasons why I should not be your role model.

1. I think I’m pretty great in a lot of ways.
2. I crack my neck in public.
3. I talk about people behind their backs, and I can’t keep a secret for my life. Seriously – this reflects a major character flaw, and I’m working on it.
4. I judge people who think “myself” is a fancy version of “me” and “I,” or who say “utilize” in any context.
5. I’m horrible about writing thank you notes.
6. I was home alone tonight, so I sat in the kitchen in a sports bra and ate anchovies out of a can.
7. I am blogging about sitting in the kitchen in a sports bra eating anchovies out of a can.
8. I whine about people respecting my privacy, then I blog about sitting in the kitchen in a sports bra eating anchovies out of a can.
9. Massive self-absorption problems, as evidenced by my use of the word “I” over 20 times in a 300-word post.
10. I blame all of that on my generation.

Okay, re: allegations that I'm doing one these "oh, my greatest weaknesses are that I'm just too much of a perfectionist, and I spend WAY too much time volunteering!" type things, here are more:
11. I'm a quitter.
12. I buy useless stuff just because it's on sale.
13. I can be super bitter about deeply stupid things.
14. When I'm in the wrong, I instantly come up with a justifying narrative so I can work myself into a self-righteous fury.
15. I fantasize about breaking bones of people who patronize me.
16. Wasn't kidding about that last one.
17. I say cruel things when I'm angry.
18. I try to outdo people.
19. My judgment is questionable.
20. I spend a ton of time feeling sorry for myself, even though I basically lead a charmed life and have had every opportunity and advantage I could ask for.

You have been warned. I feel much better now. Have a great night! Feel free to share any dark secrets (yay catharsis!) in the comments. And let me know what you want me to post about next time. XO

  1. I like your blog because of all those things. That's why you are my role model.

  2. I think the only flaw in your list is talking about people behind their backs. Can you update us on what classes you'll be taking this year and also study tricks?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Can you write a blog on what you would tell people who are right now "falling" away from their dream? Can you explain what you would do to get more A's in school. And also I think you're a good role model :)More study tricks you learned in Harvard?

  4. I love the Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother!!! Get Lulu to write a blog as well :D

  5. I would like to know what you do with your spare time. Crafting? Needle point? Dressing dogs in tiny tutus?

Dirty secret about me: I seriously debated whether or not "needle" was spelled with a K. And I'm an English major. And I do needle point. It's so embarrassing.

I am also bad at thank you notes! Phew! Glad the tiger cub is, too! Think I'll mention that to my grandmother . . .

Excited to go back to school, Sophia? Can I still write you letters at Harvard?

  11. Hello hello hello Sophia!
    How are you doing?
    I hope you're doing well :)

This post made me laugh really really REALLY hard.
Is it bad to admit that I do a lot of things on that list as well?
I don't eat anchovies though. Even still, the image of you sitting in your kitchen eating anchovies out of a can is still quite amusing. More amusing is imagining the face you make as you type numbers 7 and 8. While we're on the topic of your face, that's a great picture of you.
Your eyelashes are awesome. Would you mind posting a makeup post? Just imagine the strangeness of the tiger cub teaching other people how to not be studying and instead be primping. I like that strangeness. I like it a lot.

So. My dark secrets. I have a lot.
The most major one that comes to mind right now is that I suck with secrets. It's awful. I try not to tell people things but it somehow slips. I'm just a good person you know. Sharing is caring so I share. Even when I'm not supposed to.
Oh and the second most major dark secret I possess is that I think I am "all that". Whatever "all that" is. It must be pretty amazing if it has to do with me though ;)
Last but not least, another dark secret I have is that I'm not very good at making distinctions so I just talk/type/ramble a lot. As in, that wasn't really a dark secret since pretty much every person I interact with notices right away.
So yes. I talk a lot, I continually use the word utilize (and other things to make me sound smarticles), I make up dumb words (like awesomepossum), and I am amazing.
    That is all for now.

I feel like I could ramble on and on for days and days.
So perhaps I shall send you an e-mail or a letter at Harvard if that's alright with you.
Yay for rambling and being weird and socially unacceptable and whatnot.

Have a marvelous weekend Sophia! :)

  12. Granted, while probably nobody on this blog really knows you to the bone, it's easy to admire you on the surface. While the publicity your mom's book has received has produced a lot of criticism, there's also the starlight that has been generated where tons of teenagers and young adults around your age wish they had your current success (going to Harvard, playing piano at Carnegie Hall.. those are accomplishments that your mom has bluffed about and has the pride and right to do so. So why not?)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Whether you're blowing smoke in our faces with silliness or attestations of self-absorbtion, the result is empty and repetitive. Since it's acceptable for certain Harvard students to feel entitled to soft cult-style attention, you might as well ride the genuinely honest train while you can. Carefully indulging your fangirls & fanboys with utter nonsense, then quietly hoping they'll beg for more, is mean-spirited. You're above the hypocrisy and the insincerity, Sophia, and you know it. You want to share your thoughts with strangers, do it. You want to live your life privately, revamp your blog to divert attention from yourself and cease the juvenile games with readers.

  14. I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong or "dirty" about sitting in the kitchen in a sports bra, eating anchovies out of a can. (I mean, if you like anchovies. I don't, but substitute chocolate pudding for anchovies and I was doing the same thing a couple hours ago.)

That you talk behind other people's backs doesn't really surprise me. As amusing as I (mostly) find you, your blog and twitter do lead me to believe that you'd be pretty judgy and catty in person. (Pun! but actually.)

I'm kind of glad that you addressed the role model thing. I do think you are "pretty great in a lot of ways," but some of the completely idolizing comments on here do make me squirm a bit.

One of my biggest faults is that if I'm afraid to do something, such as write an important email or do basically anything out of my comfort zone, I put it off out of anxiety. But then as time goes on the reason for doing the original thing gets more urgent, and then I'm just in deeper trouble. I've also been using way too much parenthetical construction in this comment, which is something I usually manage to avoid and, in my opinion, makes my writing look immature.

I would love to see a post about your whole family doing something together. Or some sort of explanation for why you've been everywhere from Italy to Texas this summer. Did your parents pay for that? You? Your school? I know you said that in Italy you went without your family, so I'd be interested to know how and for what purpose you managed to get there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love this shot of brutal honesty, and it's good to know that the tiger cub is just as flawed as the rest of us. :P

As far as sharing dark secrets goes, there are two I must mention:
    1) I cannot stand people who use big words they don't understand.
    2) Despite my best efforts, I often judge the proverbial book by its cover.

Enjoy the rest of your summer :D

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh my god, my life was just summarized in about 20 bullet points right there. It's good to know I'm not the only one out there who's like that. I should also mention that I told myself I was going to eat healthier and cleaner this summer, but then I just went out and bought 4 tacos for $1 each and then ate them in about 20 minutes. (At least I'm getting protein?)

I'd love to hear about how things are at Harvard during move-in and such. What sorts of activities are there, stuff like that. I just like hearing about what different colleges do. Alsooo, am I still allowed to write you a letter or was that a one-time offer? I don't need a response; I just like sending letters, and I got these adorable Disney stamps that I want to use before the postal service goes bankrupt, and my beautiful stamps become obsolete.

  17. Happy to see that catharsis is working out well for you :p this coming from a 15-year old sitting on a day-bed. I love how you have so much in common with me, especially the self-pity part xD I'm still trying to imagine you eating anchovies out of a can...all I can imagine is you in a kitchen with a tiled flooring eating ikan bilis (Malaysian fried anchovies). Please make Lulu write a blog as well!!!!! xx

  18. I don't like to view people as role models. I enjoy your blog because you are honest and break down many misunderstandings such as tiger parenting. You are not arrogant and not afraid to look silly.

  19. Good lord,it was like i had written it myself...
I suffer from pretty much all the flaw you said you have...without the eating from a can thing...
    Your posts make my day...

PS:The fact that you are able to admit your flaws show you are indeed a good role model

    ReplyDelete
  20. I blame the bra-and-anchovies syndrome on our generation too. We have a blogosphere, we're going to blog. As it should be. :)

    Hmm, catharsis.

I secretly think there are very few people who comprehend the uniqueness that is me.

I ignore the people who care about me the most.

Phew, catharsis enough, now I think I'm evil, even though I still don't evil.

    Sigh...

    Also, I use sigh...in writing a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  28. While I think it's not acceptable to idolise a person, I do think that you're an excellent role model in a number of ways - case in point, the fact that you get to roam the hallowed halls of Harvard :P the study tips post was great...post about your high school experience please? :3 Also, random question: to what extent do you feel you're a product of your mom's upbringing? For instance, did you pick up your main extracurriculars like piano of your own volition, or because you were enrolled in classes, and do you think that a lot of the talents our generation's kids possess are really attributable to good parenting and extensive enrichment? This is not a personal attack; I'm just curious because often I feel that the few advantages I have over my peers lie in areas that I was given a kick start in when younger, and it feels like I shouldn't be allowed to take credit for it sometimes, so I wanted to hear your thoughts on the subject! Love your blog by the way and all the best!

    ReplyDelete
  29. By posting that list you're not gonna stop people from thinking of you as their role model. It's gonna make them like you more, cause once again you've demonstrated your wit, clever writing skills and ability to be self-depreciating.

Hmm, how about a Q&A/sister post with Lulu? Would love to hear about your relationship, all we really know is from Battle Hymn and that was based few years ago, right?

    ReplyDelete
  30. How often do you practice the piano? Do you actually have the opportunity to, living in a dorm? I'm a university student with a non-music major and I find that fitting in piano practice (digital piano) at the end of a long day is often the last thing I want to do. That said, I'm not near your level (unfortunately!).

  31. So ... You're like ... a normal person ?? F this, I'm leaving this blog.

So maybe the comments are sometimes a bit over the top (I regret what I said about Megan Fox. Now that I've checked how she looks like again ... I kinda changed my mind).
So eating anchovy out of a can while wearing a sports bra is embarassing ? Aha. Puny human. I did the same, except that I'm a guy ! And I freakin' enjoed it ... would you fancy some pics ? *suggestive smile*
You decided to share some private moments just for fun, if someone leaks out info you didn't intend on giving, you have the right to complain about privacy (and remain silent ... you'll manage).
The point of this comment is that ... you suck. Yes (I can already feel the angry fans' wrath, help me). But don't we all ? Would I be reading your blog if every post was about you being miss perfect ? Well, nope. You write interesting posts, and the picture to the right at the top of each page (where you are showing your "claws") makes you look crazy. So I follow.

  33. First time writing a comment here but I've been a long time reader and fan of you're blog ever since 'that' book lol (which is one of my favorite books actually). I don't think you should feel worried about having flaws. No one's perfect, everyone has negative aspects but it's the person you are overall besides those aspects that count.

As for future subjects to talk about, I'm really curious as to whether you have any favorite Mandarin singers? Anyway, good luck with the future. All the best.

  46. Look at those hypnotic eyes drawing me inn. Then you craft your words so tastefully wanting me to keep reading forever. How can we not consider you a role model? You thinking your great in a lot of ways is justifiable considering your list of accomplishments. Hello didn’t you play at Carnegie Hall at age 12? Some musicians play a life time and not accomplish this great feat. Don’t you attend one of the greatest academic institutions? I would have loved to attend the candy land of academics, but my parents never pushed academics. This summer you did give a speech in china right? Who does this all by the age of 21? I would hope people would aspire to be like you? Semper Fidelis

  48. Haha, you don't have to feel guilty about misleading us on how much of a role model you are. Everybody has their bad sides, and I think we all unconsciously realize that so that it leads us to look more into tangible, outwards accomplishments in people we admire. Whatever supposed flaws you may think you have, it evidently didn't get in the way of your ultimate success! That's what we care about. It's also really nice and says equally much about character if you are that aware of things you can improve in yourself. This post didn't change my view on you at all. I still think you're a great example to ambitious girls all around the world. :)

    Thanks for your answer!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Do you feel the celebrity that came with your mother's book has changed your relationship with any friends, family, classmates? If so how?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Sophia,
Just an opinion on No. 20: "I spend a ton of time feeling sorry for myself, even though I basically lead a charmed life and have had every opportunity and advantage I could ask for." Charmed opportunities and advantages are external to ourselves and not of our making. They are merely the circumstances of our existence. Therefore they are marginal to the meaning in our lives. When you feel sorry for yourself, it may have less to do with these external circumstances, and more to do with a failure to seize and tease the meaning out of your life. So the way to avoid "wasting" that ton of time feeling separated from yourself is to move daily toward your dreams, one moment at a time.

If you're running along the river, run with the knowledge that you are developing the body your life meaning needs to fulfill itself. If you're sitting idly with your anchovies, move your mind into the stillness of that moment and away from the what ifs of life. Don't idealize purpose. That puts it out of your reach. Embrace the purpose that rises out of your self truth and hold it dear and close at hand. Infuse every task with that truth. If you're working deep into the night on projects assigned to you, but unrelated to you, work with diligence and commitment nonetheless.

Meaning unfurls through the attitude we bring to the daily doings of our lives. If it is unclear to you, watch for it in your choices. Our choices become habits, our habits become our character, our character really does become our destiny. Ergo: Choose meaningfully. Your many gifts are a gift to the wider world as well. Be them fully.

  66. Hi Sophia!
Just want to get some advice... I really need it for the upcoming school year and I think a lot of people do since a lot of people are taking AP classes. Anyway, I know that you're really smart and obviously you've got straight "A's" since you were Valedictorian and you got accepted to Harvard, but how do you cope with sleepiness? It's one of my main problems and sometimes I have hard times finishing homework since I'm so tired at night. I know that you said "you can sleep when your dead" but how to you stay up when you're so tired and exhausted that you feel like you can't do anything?
Maybe I have narcalepsy (I spelled that wrong...), but I feel like people who have a disorder that involves sleeping too much can't succeed. Please give me the best advice you'll ever give.
P.S. Please give me an answer that doesn't include coffee or any drugs as a solution.
    Thanks! :)

  67. Hey,

As a fairly self-absorbed girl who has had everything handed to her (fantastic parents, great education from a Top 10 School, etc), I can sympathize. I spend an insane amount of time feeling bad for myself, then feeling bad for being ridiculous, then promising myself I won't do it again.... and 3 days later - Poof. I'm back to it. I don't have anything of value to add (if I knew how to stop, I would be a much better person). but I guess it's one of those things that you first have to realize that you do and then try to work on it? IDK. All I'm saying is that you're not alone in this :) I think I'm pretty great, too.

I hate it when people idolize artists/public personnalities or see them as role models because it shows a lack of self esteem and I see it as an excuse for bypassing your own life by admiring someone else's. But that said, I do like you! Your blog entries are smart and fun although there aren't a lot of them! I don't see you as a role model but more like a girl who I could hang out with. That is if you don't act too childish around me and my senior friends!
Are you excited to go back to school? I know I am.
One of my "darkest secrets" would be that I can't stand pack mentality and self-righteous people. H.

    1. I don't mean to be rude, but I disagree with the role model bit. I can't speak for everyone else, but personally I think role models aren't just for admiring. They're people who've gone out and achieved great things, and they inspire people like me to dream bigger and work harder so that I too can do something meaningful instead of "bypassing [my] own life." Just my two cents :)

    2. role models are different for everyone. it just depends on who you look up to and who you try to be like. it doesn't matter how good or bad that person is. if someone thinks of them as a role model, then they are (at least for that person)

  76. Hi Sophia, your self confessed flaws don't reduce your awesomeness in any manner. It would be very helpful if in one of your subsequent blog entries you could highlight how the college atmosphere and classes are at Harvard. Although Harvard selects the most brightest children, do you think that it focuses enough on its undergraduates? Of what I've heard, people who graduate from Harvard college talk of the enriching experience because of their 'highly accomplished peers' - and not of a professor or a research course etc etc. As a prospective international premed student from India, is Harvard a good place to nurture and grow? Sorry for bombarding you with many questions, but I am curious to know what you think. Thank you...

The Dean told me I need to "play my politics." At least Harvard is investigating, and making sure it doesn't happen again. Wish I could have said that about my undergrad university!

I love your blogs so much, that I re-read them hundreds of times, and then memorize them to think about them when i'm not in the position of reading them again. Dont let them get you, Pikachu... never let them ruin your writing spark. Use your electricity, stomp 'em, slaughter them, but never admit that they are better, because they are not.     your blogs are lightnin that never fades;

Because the beauty is too overwhelming
because the song I hear is too strong
your words whispher truths i'm never telling
because my indecisivness is too long

And you are an outcast, I can see

They tried to erase your spirit long ago

whenever i see your words pouring from pixels
i'm feeling week, i'm staying faceless

So long live, Pikachu, one and only
    the loneliness cuts through every bone;
but its not a sin to be lonely
as long as your thoughts are not alone.

    Much love Pikachu

Nights are so boring, indeed, but never forget that you ARE A LONER, its in your blood, even if you think otherwise... We are born alone, and we die alone... but you will never die, because you are immortalized in your mom's memoir, and through this blogs... Your social skills are poor, because you are SO DIFFERENT, but you masked yourself in order to be socially accepted. I can name hundreds of things that are different about you... that are superior, compared to other human beings... socializing is just a mask in your case... YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE A LONEWOLF, Sophia, like Travis Bickle from Taxi driver movie... but you had to minimalize your potential, in order to blend in the crowd, to become part of that typical, mediocre thinking pattern... but your loneliness acually never dies... it hides in the depths of your fear... fear of isolation, of greatness, of being alone on the top...but one day, you will know why... and when that day comes, you will see clearly, and i hope - truly prepared. The flame of greatness, that sleeps inside you, never dies... process of hibernation is only temporary solution... soon, your true nature will arise... rescue your true nature, Sophia... accept isolation, accept loneliness, accept GREATNESS, SOPHIA OPHIA PHIA HIA IA A

Lonely nights are your formative nights actually, because through them, you nurture your true nature. You've never been part of a wolfpack, you are one marvelous, colossal Steppenwolf... being of superhuman willpower and hunger, girl with much more to offer then a superficial outlook on life and a vagina... look all those girls around you, aren't they pathetic? Superficial, WEAK, focused only on primitive tasks and easily acheaving goals... they are part of a WOLFPACK, and you are beautiful, colossal Steppenwolf. Do you understand now? And that guy who told you to immediately go to a party - don't listen to him. He is an artist? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH He is WEAK WEAK WEAK WEAK WEAK... compared to you, immortal Steppenwolf... he will never understand you, your loneliness and pain, that gives birth to a never-dying flame. Goodbye for now

Dear Steppenwolf Chua-Rubenfeld, I think you definitely should study architecture, because it suits your megalomaniac tendencies perfectly. You should project buildings so big and marvelous, that for the next millenium, generations and generations of artistically curious tourists and architecture nerds could satisfy their aristocratic, elitistic and esthetic needs, simply by seeing them. You should build skyscrapers, museums and coloseums so big and grotesque, that weak minded individals would imidiately get a schizophrenic attack in their presence. For creating epilepsy attacks, you should build palaces with colour changing lights inside them. And as far as strong minded individuals are concerned, they will be inspired and propeled to greatness when they see your work.

You will be great architect one day, Sophia Pikachua-Rubenfeld. Stay strong, brave and brutal.

  117. Maybe she became bored with us, and with this whole blogging thing... no, really, this is a possibility. As far as I know, she opened this blog to clarify some things in the first place, and to kill the image of "automaton and child-robot who will commit suicide in the future", that was thrust upon her by media and people who never even read the book. But now, Tiger mom controversy is only a bad memory, things are much better and life goes on... so why keep on posting on this blog? She has many things going on in her life, I doubt that she even spends more than 15 minutes on internet daily... she is not a loner that reads books on recess anymore. She is probably sexually active, has a bunch of friends from her sisterhood, studies, and everything has settled down... and this blog, to be perfectly honest, is a reminder of some really gross times... the problem is that there are bunches of people who don't live fullfiled and active life, so they come here and read all her blog posts and suffer, because they would want to be there and maybe to live that kind of life. But don't be silly - you are just pixel on the screen, and nothing more. That's the truth.

    2. Unless you are Sophia, I honestly don't give a damn. :)

It's not intended to sound harsh, I just think that's reality. But why exactly do you think it sounds harsh? I mean, c'mon. That's just one opinion amongst thousands of them. And there are really people that tend to identify themselves with someone who is living rich and dynamic and fulfilled life, someone who pushes his/her potential to extreme boundaries by working exceptionally hard and applying strong will, simpy because they are not in that position. :) People love, admire and envy forceful personalities, and Sophia is one. I mean, you can jump to that conclusion just by reading her essay on tiger mom... by reading last part of it, more precisely:

There’s one more thing: I think the desire to live a meaningful life is universal. To some people, it’s working toward a goal. To others, it’s enjoying every minute of every day. So what does it really mean to live life to the fullest? Maybe striving to win a Nobel Prize and going skydiving are just two sides of the same coin. To me, it’s not about achievement or self-gratification. It’s about knowing that you’ve pushed yourself, body and mind, to the limits of your own potential. You feel it when you’re sprinting, and when the piano piece you’ve practiced for hours finally comes to life beneath your fingertips. You feel it when you encounter a life-changing idea, and when you do something on your own that you never thought you could. If I died tomorrow, I would die feeling I’ve lived my whole life at 110 percent.

I am in awe of how confident, strong and independent you seem. My question is - do you think there's hope for people who just... aren't? (yet?) as a hypersensitive child, i think i grew up in that catgeory you described of children who see affection as tied to achieving - ie conditional love. inevitably, i have little self-esteem; i also struggle with perfectionism and an impulse control disorder, both of which make me feel like i am incapable and failing on a daily - hourly - basis. i always wonder how much is environment and attitude (eg if i exercised more, planned better, maybe i could change all this)and how much is just personality. reading your mum's memoir i was struck by how set & distinct you and lulu seemed in personality from the start.

i guess basically what i'm asking is - do you think anyone can develop confidence and strength, regardless of their upbringing? could someone tiger themselves into the person they want to be?

love your blog by the way.

Does Lulu still play violin? Does she just play for fun now, or is she getting more serious about it?

Stop inadequate breakfasts. Stop shame. Update this blog. It's for a good cause.

On the other hand, I know you're probably really busy, so only do this when you have time! :)

Well, Pikachu, since I promised to put my own list on your blog... here it is:

1.Your cheeks inspire me. Your facial expression matured with time, but your cheeks stayed the same, since you were a baby. I love analysing them, imagining that I touch them while you are sleeping... puting my hand beneath them, and touching them gently while you eat, to follow the rhythm of your chewing.

2.I hate almost everyone you love, except your mom, dad, sister, and grandparents. Leon is great. I also hate every person you hate. Hatred... the only thing that lasts.

3.Wasn't kiddin' about that last one.

4.I sometimes imagine that your vagina is a beautiful cave, with river flowing through that cave... and I simply jump on the boat, and become a tourist with special interest in caves.

5.Wasn't kiddin' about that last one. And I'm not a perv, I'm just celebrating your bodily fluids.

    6.I hate making lists.

    7.This is an exception.

8.Remember my first secret? Well, forgot to mention: I sometimes imagine that you are terribly hungry, so you come to me, and I'm filling your mouth with rivers of sriracha sauce, and while you are joyfully drinking, I'm touching your cheeks. Mmmm. Yes. Yes. YES. Or I'm feeding you with this beautiful chocolate cookies, and you are enjoying yourself. You are happy.

9.I love writing poems to you.

10.I love writing on your blog, keeps life interesting, I suppose. :)

    Enough?

  152. I'm not anonymous. I think that your really good. I'm 11, and I've read your mother's book. My parents are really strict to me, but I realize that they are always doing it for my own good. I'm the top student in most classes, but I only struggle a little in science. My parents are always telling me that they used to be a lot better than me. I'm trying my best, since I'm crazy busy.I'm Chinese too. All I could ever wish for is to go to Harvard. It's been my life's desire since I was 4.

  155. Gabrielle Tse Mei YingNovember 5, 2012 at 4:23 AM

    Dear Sophia,
Hi! I'm Gabrielle Tse, a 12 year old from Hong Kong. After reading the many controversial reports on Mrs. Chua's book, I felt compelled to read it. I realized that it wasn't all as awful as what Yahoo HK had said in their news reports a while back. I thought that the book was clever and witty- she was quite harsh on you guys, but she did succeed in producing two intelligent child prodigies. (I especially loved your essay 'Conquering Juliet')
I'm not sure why I'm writing this (I actually stumbled upon your blog while writing my EPA essay), but I truly want to wish you and Louisa luck for your futures.
Lots of cheers from Hong Kong!

  156. I'm assuming you are still reading comments, though you have have decided not to. I was thinking about this blog because over the last week, I have corrected so many people (including my boss... bad idea) on using the word "utilize" properly. I'm not a grammar Nazi in any respect, but now I think its kind of fun. Hope all is well with you. - Aurora

  158. Sophia, admittedly it's been a long while since I last read up, so I decided to catch up now as I make a terrible lunch decision. :)

This is among my favorite posts of yours -- and not just because it's funny. The fact is people are going to make their own conclusions about you and even if you told them you pick your nose and eat it multiple times a day, no minor flaw of yours is really going to change it.

We are all human, and although most of us probably don't eat anchovies out of a can in our sports bras when alone, we all have our own version of that.

Thanks for not taking yourself too seriously: the world will change once it knows to embrace everyone and everything in their entirety. :)

    Pamela

  159. You sound JUST like me when I was in college. But don't worry, you will grow out of a lot of those "flaws" as you get a little older, probably by around 25-27. Contrary to what you might think now, they are not permanent character flaws, but mostly just symptoms of adolescence that will improve with age.
